ROSE-PAINTING is the term generally used to describe the decorative rustic painting which flourished in N orway from the beginning of the i Sth to the middle of the i qth century. It is to be found on the walls, ceilings and furniture of peasants' houses, as weIl as on a great number of smaller objects, Far removed from the conventional arts of the towns, it enabled the N orwegian peasant to express his innate love of colour and ornament, while the pure bright hues and bold brushwork give the decoration a pecurliarly Norwegian eliaraeter and a charm of its own. The illustrations in this book comprise a selection of the best and most eliaraeteristic specimens of this colourful art.
