Dvorak's Mass in D major was commissioned for theceremonial consecration of the castlechapel at Luzany, the seat of architect and benefactor Josef Hlavka. Despitethis fact,the Mass is nevertheless intended for performance by provincial choirs. Thisjoyful work,revealing Dvorak's intimate knowledge of rural Czech sacred music, is writtenfor solovoices, mixed choir and organ. Our edition contains the original version and ispart ofthe first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak. The preface waswrittenby Jarmil Burghauser.
